Reference Checks – Are you doing them????? And Properly

It still amazes me that l constantly speak with managers, and they discuss behavioural and technical skills that are nowhere near the level that was discussed during the interview….

Have you completed the reference? No or l have done one and it was brief…............

If there is one piece of advice l can give everyone is this is a CRITICAL part of the recruitment process, and you MUST spend extra time doing your due diligence.

Things to consider:

  • Make sure the manager you are calling is legitimate – look them up and call reception versus just calling the mobile number given

  • If you have any reservations explore them, don’t just go through your standard form and tick off everything like it’s for compliance

  • Get examples

Inflation Or Price Gouging....

It’s interesting over the last few months, with so much media attention on increasing inflation. Many are using the opportunity to increase their pricing and attribute the price hikes to maximising the current rhetoric in the media. Ensure you don’t become a victim of accepting the updated invoice that comes past your desk, when the increase is two, three, four and five times the rate of the rise of inflation you need to be asking yourself the question. Do you need this product or service? What are the other options you could consider? At a minimum call the supplier and ask for a meeting. You will be surprised what you can negotiate in person.

Business Subscriptions, it’s time for a quick audit....

Much like at home, we sign up for business subscriptions; we have Netflix, Disney, Kayo and many more. The question you need to ask yourself is, do you use them? Are you getting a return on them? Do you even know you are paying for them? I have been working with several businesses over the last 12 months that have not audited their expenses and subscriptions and have been paying for things they don't need or have not looked at. People have moved on or don’t use that product anymore and have not looked at the return on investment. It’s an easy mistake to make when you are busy running your business. If you have not looked at your subscriptions, it’s time to complete an audit. You may be shocked at the wastage in your business....you can't save yourself for success. However, you can use these funds elsewhere, which will make a difference.
